Sitting Down with Scholars 51

Sitting Down with Darshana

Dr Darshana Khalita grew up in Assam, moved to New Delhi at eleven, earned her PhD in Germany, and is now working in clinical trial management, each move a deliberate step towards greater access and greater impact.

Her doctorate focused on the female brain: specifically, how women who carry X-linked genes for disorders like Fragile X syndrome have brains that look and function differently, even when they show no obvious symptoms. It is an area where the literature is thin, the funding is scarce, and the questions are urgent.

In this episode, we talk about leaving one PhD to start another, what clinical trials reveal about the systemic neglect of women’s health, why everyone thinks her research is about Fragile X syndrome when it is really about the female brain, and why complications in science should excite us rather than discourage us. Keep learning, keep questioning.
