What do stained glass windows, Gothic cathedrals, and the ecstatic prayer of a 12th-century French abbot have in common? For Dane Litchfield, they are the starting point of a research career at the intersection of theology, art history, and the lived experience of faith. A first-year PhD candidate in theology at the University of Dayton, Dane is tracing the stories of people throughout history whose encounters with beauty, with light filtering through coloured glass, with soaring vaulted stone, all of this and more shaped how they prayed and how they understood God.
In this episode, we talk about Gothic architecture, cultural subjectivity in art, the untold stories that keep him up at night, and why everyone thinks his research is about cathedrals when it is really about spirituality. Keep learning, keep questioning.
